What is SBOB?
What is SBOB?
SBOB is an acronym for Sycamore Band and Orchestra Boosters.
It is a very active group of volunteers who work with the instrumental music staff of Sycamore Community Schools to support, enhance, and supplement the needs of the Instrumental Music Program in the Sycamore Community School District. Simply, it’s band and orchestra parents/caregivers who want to help make their child’s musical experience at Sycamore the best it can be.
Why would an instrumental music program need such an organization?
Sycamore has an excellent and active music program. Beginning in Kindergarten, students are introduced to musical instruments provided by Sycamore. In fifth grade, students choose an instrument of interest, and many of these are provided by Sycamore. By high school, most students have become accomplished musicians, some able to play several instruments. At this level, more instruments are needed to fulfill the needs of the students. SBOB supports the Instrumental Music Program by purchasing needed instruments and equipment and paying for repairs when necessary. Additionally, SBOB has helped to pay for guest artists, master classes, adjudicated events entry fees, special programs, and awards. The organization has helped many students reach their dreams by providing scholarships and financial aid.
Where does the money come from to pay for all this?
There are four major annual fundraisers: Tag Day in September, Craft Show in November, Pancake Day in March, and Mattress sale in April. Over 98% of all monies collected go back to the students and programs with less than 2% used for the operational costs of the organization.
How is such an important organization managed?
SBOB was organized in the 1960’s with the current structure in place since 1983. It is not-for-profit and recognized as a 501(c) 3 organization. It is run by an Executive Board called trustees made up of twelve parents and four members of the Instrument Music staff of the district. Six parent trustees are elected each year and have two-year terms; trustee membership is limited to two consecutive terms.
How else can parents help?
There’s always something to be done from chaperoning events; helping at receptions; fitting, maintaining, and repairing uniforms; trip planning; and just being involved and supporting student activities as they go through their years in the Sycamore Instrumental Music Program. Every little bit makes a difference and is always appreciated
